We have to go back to the 12th century to find the first traces of the rosary.
In most Cistercian monasteries, the lay brothers got into the habit of reciting the Lord's Prayer while the monk brothers sang the psalms.
To do this, they used the rope around their waist, a rope on which some tied knots, in order to follow the procession of their prayer.
This group took the name of paternôtre.

How to pray the rosary ?
The recitation begins at the cross with the sign of the cross, one “I believe in God”, one “Our Father”, three “Hail Marys” and one “Glory be to the Father”.
It then consists of the recitation of an “Our Father”, ten “Hail Marys” and a “Glory to the Father”.
We combine the recitation of the tens with the contemplation of the joyful, painful and glorious mysteries of the life of Christ.
During the Year of the Rosary, Pope Saint John Paul II proposed adding the prayer of the luminous mysteries.

In his encyclical "Rosarium Virginis Mariae", Pope Saint John Paul II reminds us of the importance of reciting the Rosary.
