The rosary is an object of prayer, often presented in the form of a string of beads. It consists of five groups called ‘tens’, each made up of ten beads, separated by a single bead. Before the central part, which is often decorated with a medal representing the Virgin Mary, a saint or a religious symbol, there is a cross followed by five beads.

These beads accompany the recitation of the Hail Mary. The rosary prayer begins with the sign of the cross, followed by the profession of faith (‘I believe in God’), an ‘Our Father’, three ‘Hail Marys’ and a ‘Glory be to the Father’.

Each decade is then structured by an ‘Our Father’, ten ‘Hail Marys’ and a ‘Glory be to the Father’. Each series of prayers is accompanied by a meditation on a mystery from the life of Christ, grouped into four categories: the joyful, sorrowful, glorious and luminous mysteries.
