Learn more about the Holy Crown of Thorns: 

"Passion relics" are objects presumed to have been used in the crucifixion of Christ. Notre-Dame de Paris preserves the crown of thorns, a piece of the cross and a nail. August 19, 1239 marks a historic date: the relics, on their way from Constantinople, solemnly enter the capital. King Louis IX, the future Saint Louis, gave up his royal insignia. Dressed in a modest tunic and barefoot, he devoutly carried the crown of thorns to Notre-Dame de Paris, watched by a moving crowd.

An object of piety and fascination, this Passion relic is the most precious of all those housed in the cathedral. In accordance with the vow of the Holy King, it is only displayed to the faithful during Easter celebrations, the central moment in the Christian liturgy commemorating Christ's resurrection. The original plant circle, measuring 21 cm in diameter, is made of rushes held together by gold thread. Although the thorns that once adorned it have been dispersed over the centuries through gifts and exchanges, some seventy thorns are still identified as coming from this sacred crown.

Since 1896, this holy object has been protected by a crystal and gold reliquary, whose finely chased frame represents a branch of Spina Christi (zizyphus), a thorny shrub found in the Holy Land. This goldsmith's masterpiece, donated by believers in the Paris diocese, was designed by Poussielgue-Rusand, based on drawings by the architect Astruc.
