Souvenir Card Pieta Reopening - French

This French version of the prayer card of Notre-Dame features a deeply evocative visual of the Pietà. The visual of the Pietà on this prayer card is the sublime sculpture inside Notre-Dame Cathedral. Placed behind the high altar of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, this moving Pietà sculpture is the work of Nicolas Coustou, created in 1723 at the request of Louis XIV, in homage to the promise made by his father, Louis XIII.

The scene depicts the Virgin Mary, greatly saddened, holding the inert body of Christ on her knees after the Crucifixion. Beside her on the right is Louis XIII handing over his crown and sceptre, and on the left is Louis XIV at prayer.

On the reverse, a prayer is written and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This prayer offers a moment of contemplation and meditation. Finally, a medal of the Virgin Mary is inlaid in the card, adding a sacred dimension to the object.
