The Treasure of Notre-Dame, like other treasures in religious buildings, preserves objects intended for the liturgy of the Catholic Church. This treasure was amongst the richest in France until the French Revolution.
Destroyed during that period, it was reconstituted during the 19th century, particularly during the restoration of the cathedral and the reconstruction of the sacristy, starting in 1849.
The pieces of the treasure are not objects frozen in their display cases like in museums. They have kept their primary vocation and are regularly used for celebrations and ceremonies held at the Cathedral.
