"Passion relics" are objects presumed to have been used in the crucifixion of Christ. Notre-Dame de Paris preserves the crown of thorns, a piece of the cross and a nail.
On August 19, 1239, the relics arrived in Paris in a procession. Saint-Louis abandons his royal finery, dons a simple tunic and, barefoot, carries the crown of thorns to Notre-Dame de Paris.
The crown of thorns is undoubtedly the most precious and revered of the relics kept at Notre-Dame.
In accordance with the vow of Saint Louis, it is only shown to the faithful at Easter, the day on which Christ's resurrection is celebrated, three days after his death on the cross. The crown is made of a 21 cm circle of thorns held together by gold thread. The thorns were dispersed over the centuries through various donations. Seventy thorns are known to have come from this crown. Since 1896, the crown has been protected by a crystal and gold tube. The openwork frame features a branch of zizyphus or Spina Christi, a thorny shrub common in Palestine. This reliquary, donated by the faithful of the Diocese of Paris, was created by the goldsmith Poussielgue-Rusand (1861-1933) from drawings by the archbishop of Paris.
