Saint Christopher of Lycia was a martyr of the 3rd century. As a new convert, he was captured by the Romans and heroically died defending the Christians of Rome persecuted by Emperor Decius in 250. The veneration of Saint Christopher spread from the 5th century onward, and a basilica was built in his honor in Bithynia.

Saint Christopher is depicted as a bearded giant carrying the Child Jesus on his shoulder and holding his pilgrim's staff in his hand. This representation comes from the Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine.

Christopher of Lycia was a giant who freed himself from the devil's power and devoted himself to God's service. He served as a ferryman, helping travelers cross a turbulent river. One day, a little boy came to cross the river. Christopher carried him on his shoulder, but the child became increasingly heavy, and the river's currents grew violent. Finally, after safely carrying the child to the other side, the Child Jesus revealed himself to the giant and said, "I am Christ, and when you carried me, you were also carrying the weight of the whole world, as I am the creator of the world."

From then on, the saint was called Christopher, which means "Christ-bearer" in Greek.

The feast of Saint Christopher is celebrated on August 21st.
