Notre-Dame Hematite Rosary

This beautiful rosary, made with hematite beads, has been specially crafted in an artisanal workshop for Notre-Dame.

The centerpiece of this magnificent rosary depicts the Virgin with Child. This depiction of the Virgin dates back to the 14th century. Originally venerated in the ancient Saint-Aignan chapel on the Île de la Cité, it was integrated into the façade of the cathedral to replace the Virgin destroyed during the revolution. Later, it was placed by Viollet-le-Duc in the transept of the cathedral, on the right side, where an altar dedicated to Mary had always stood. The statue is now revered under the name "Notre-Dame de Paris."

The name "hematite" comes from the Latin word "haematites," derived from the Greek "haima," which means blood. This association with blood comes from its intense and deep color, which is why it is also known as the "blood stone" in French.

Before being used for healing physical and psychological ailments, hematite was used as a pigment for painting. In the Paleolithic era, Homo sapiens crushed the stone to obtain a red powder. By mixing it with water or fat, they obtained a blood-colored texture. For example, in the Chauvet Cave, there are drawings of reindeer and bison painted with hematite, dating back 30,000 years!

In the Middle Ages, hematite pigments were used for the ornaments of cathedrals.

The rosary is a prayer object that resembles a necklace of beads composed of five sets of ten beads, the decades. Each set is followed by a separate bead.

A cross and five beads are placed before the centerpiece, which features the image of the Blessed Virgin, a saint, or a Christian symbol. These beads are used to recite the Hail Mary prayer.

The recitation begins with the sign of the cross, followed by "I believe in God," "Our Father," three "Hail Mary" prayers and one "Glory be."

It then consists of reciting one "Our Father" ten "Hail Mary" prayers and one "Glory be". The recitation of the decades is combined with the contemplation of the joyful, sorrowful, glorious and luminous mysteries of the life of Christ.
